About the Transgender Emergency Fund of MA
Founded in 2008, the Transgender Emergency Fund of Massachusetts (TEF), a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, is committed to providing critical assistance for transgender people living in Massachusetts who are low-income or experiencing homelessness. The Transgender Emergency Fund assists with homelessness prevention, shelter assistance, nutrition assistance, prescription co-pay assistance, transportation and escort to medical appointments, among providing other basic needs and modes of support. For the past several years, TEF has expanded its services to include weekend retreats, holiday gatherings, and support groups. Trans Emergency Fund is run on private donations and grant funding, thus, all services are contingent on the availability of funds.

It is currently estimated that one in five transgender adults have experienced homelessness during their lifetime. Furthermore, transgender and nonbinary people experiencing homelessness also struggle to receive services from traditional housing programs and shelters due to stigma and discrimination from program staff and other guests. To begin to provide a tangible solution to this crisis, in 2020 TEF launched a Transitional Housing Initiative with the goal of purchasing a building to provide temporary, full-time housing and all the resources necessary to get a handful of homeless transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people off the streets and on their feet. We want to make a safe place where these individuals can learn all the skills necessary to become self-sufficient and successful in securing housing and employment.

TEF has been awarded a grant with the Commonwealth’s Community Empowerment and Reinvestment Fund to launch our Transitional Housing Program, a five bedroom home in Boston to provide emergency housing and wrap around services to assist unhoused Trans individuals in the Massachusetts area.
